Should i buy a macbook air and a cheap gaming pc or just a macbook pro w/ retina?
What is a better long term solution to my academic and video gaming needs:

    1) Macbook air + 600$ build-it-yourself gaming PC

    2) 13 inch macbook pro with retina display?

You didn't exactly say what your academic and video gaming needs were...but I would say Choice 1.

Agree with Nick. The MacBook Air for academic use and a home built Windows machine for gaming. A good Windows gaming machine is best at what it does best - run gaming software!
