Macbook pro Wired Internet connection is really slow

Im in college right now and upon telling my roommate i was getting download speeds of about 700kb/s he look as if i had thrown up and eaten it in his face. He has a windows and i told him i had a mac and he said that was probably why. Any idea on how to fix the sluggish internet?
