do iBook batteries die after 13 months?

my iBook is 13 months old. I mostly use it for occasional trips, and my usage is less than an hour or two a week on average. It has been treated normally, not dropped or drowned. It worked fine until two days ago, and then the battery stopped accepting a charge. I tried depleting the battery and recalibrating, resetting parameter ram and resetting the power management unit. I have a hard time accepting that this expensive battery would fail after so little use. I've used lots of rechargeable battery devices and have never seen such a short battery life. Is this just the way iBooks are?
(This is not one of the iBooks with a battery recall. The battery has a bit earlier serial number than the recalled ones.)

I dont have an iBook but my cousin has been using his iBook daily for almost 4 years now and still using the same battery
