hi all. my macbook 3,1 Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.2 GHz has a problem and "i've had all i stand and i can't stands no more" (sorry popeye) ok heres the deal. my screen only lights up when i angle it towards the user (about 65 degrees or less) above that it goes dark. too dark to see. i was told that it could be a pinch in the cable or ribbon. how can i check and repair this.

You have to disassemble, inspect, and replace what's damaged.

Just like a problem on a automobile engine (or just about anything)...inspect, disassemble, inspect again, and replace what's worn or damaged.

Go to iFixit: The free repair manual and look up the take apart instructions for your model MacBook. It may be a pinched or loose cable. This problem occurs on MacBooks and MBP machines as they get older primarily because of the many times the lid is opened and closed or opened too far back past 90 degrees.
