New hard drive

It appears the hard drive in my 2010 MacBook pro has crashed. I've tried repairing and reinstating the os with the DVD that came with my notebook but the computer don't see the hard drive.. my question is after installing a new hard drive can I used the DVD that came with my notebook to install the OS on the hard drive or do I have to get a full version like I would with windows?

Well the disk that came with your Macbook should be the OS, but obviously it will have to update, as OSX has changed since that DVD has been made.

Thanks for the help. I figured it would have to update. But it will do that all by itself I assumes? Or free anyway!
