I have a friend whos Powerbook OSX loads to a grey screen with a folder and the apple face icon and a question mark flashing. Is there a way to get past this to get the computer to boot up all the way???

Sounds like the PowerBook can not find the boot disk. Boot from your install media and run disk utility to see if you can see your boot disk. if yo ucan not see your boot disk then you may have lost your disk.

Is the install media the OSX disk that came with the powerbook? Also if the disk is in the drive will it boot from that or do you have to hit a special key?

I am assuming that you are speaking of the restore disks. I have not looked at mine since I purchased my system some 4 years ago. As for booting from a CD/DVD, restart your system with the media in the drive, then press and hold down the c key. Your system should start to read the CD/DVD boot media.

The problem for me is I don't know what is on the restore media. Hopefully, someone else will come along with the answer.
