Why is it that after the battery power dies on these older models that you have to charge the battery for ~10 minutes or so until it will come back on? Is there something you could install so it will power on as soon as you plug in the AC cord?

One way to circumvent this issue...is don't let the battery run all the way down till it automatically shuts off. Plug it in BEFORE it shuts down due to lack of battery power.

As far as the question. Maybe the MacBook Pro's "SMC"...gets "confused" when the computer has to shut off due to the lack of battery power. So maybe the SMC needs to be reset:
