I have a 3 year old macbook pro and I have noticed that it has been slowing down a lot lately. I started running parallels once in a while and some of my other apps like safari, itunes, etc are just a lot slower than normal.

Specs:

Mac OS X
Version 10.5.8

Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

So it looks like my computer is 64 bit, so will upgrading to snow leopard or lion help my speed? Also, can I upgrade my RAM or do I need to update my OS and RAM to get the full benefit?

Thanks!

I would suggest upgrading to at least snow leopard 10.6.8 and you'll probably notice a difference. I'm running the same year 2.26ghz model with lion and it runs pretty fast. Start up is a bit slower then it was with SL but still not bad.

It happens to everyone when your Mac got sluggish or slow you find yourself in no-mans land when you were working on some important project and your Mac just hangs. The possible reasons may be you have not enough free space or there may some unwanted data on your hard drive which captures the space.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Suggest downloading and running periodically Onyx the best cleaning utility for the Mac. Avoid AV software, MacKeeper etc., and make sure you have at least 20% free hard drive space free. And definitely go to SL or Lion. Make sure you do a clean install rather than upgrade. Back up files etc to an external and use Migration Assistant to bring them over. The fastest improvement will be with an SSD.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I just tried to use the family iMac and it was as slow as can be. I looked on it for a reason and it's because 318gb of the 320gb hard drive is being used..... Glad that is not my computer lol

From the way it sounds, you need to upgrade your ram. Also upgrading to Snow Leopard might be a good idea. And as other people have said make sure that you have adequate space left on your harddrive.
