Should I have ordered a new Mac?

My oldish 15 inch MacBook Pro 3,1 almost died today. As in it was crashing, Pinwheeling and not allowing me to do anything until I literally threatened to Wozniak it! (throw it out a window). I ran Disc Utility and it instructed me to use the Discs that came with the computer to run Disc utility from the install discs themselves....my Super drive has never liked to its job ever, when I had Applecare it was replaced once and it recognizes some cds/dvds but most of the time it spits it back to me on the outside wondering why it wont cooperate. I just ordered a 17 inch Unibody from Mac Mall fearing the worst that my 15 is about to kick the bucket. I think I might have jumped the gun. what do you think? I have had mostly hardware problems since I got the machine. it now saying I have corrupt files and this HD is no good no more.

No don't think you have jumped the gun.

The optical drive in the MBP has failed as they do often and replacement is well over $100 for what? Still on older, slower MacBook Pro compared to the new Unibody. And add another $70 for a HDD. Advertise it as parts on eBay listing problems and let it go.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I had no idea it could be listed as parts I will absolutely have to try doing that. Thanks for your valuable input.

The newer macbook pros are great. You won't regret buying it. If you're going to sell your old pro contact me. I'd be interested in buying. clittle56@yahoo.com
