Macbook 4.1 speaker problem

please help my macbook is experiencing intermittent problem built in speakers sound is intermittent.

Mac OS X 10.5.8
2.1GHz Core 2Duo
1G 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Can you be a bit more descriptive? When does it happen, when listening to music? what programs are you using when it happens? does it happen in both VLC and iTunes, for example?

while listening on itunes, I did connect my headphone and dusconnect it the volume up and down seems not to be working. After checking audio ob system preferences , I can only see digital output and no speaker I can find. but with headphones connected its working properly.
