Do you need a palm or trackpad guard?

I'm getting my first ever Macbook tomorrow. It's a Macbook Air, but I have noticed you can buy protective stickers for the palms area and the trackpad.
I can understand why the palm area would need protection, but why would the trackpad?
The Moshi one appears to be the best quality, but do you think this Trackpad Palm Guard Cover Protector f. Macbook Pro/Air/White 11''13''15 unibody | eBay cheaper version could be poor quality?
Do you even recommend a palm/track guard? My previous laptop did get scratched in the palm area from jewelry, but now I know that it can cause this, I won't wear braceletts while on the Macbook.
