Sleep/ Battery Power Settings During Time Machine Backup

I have been having major hard drive issues (super slow and programs stopped opening saying I needed to check with developer?) and came to the conclusion after researching that I might as well make a hd upgrade. So now that things are slow my time machine back up seems like it will take atleast a day to complete at its pace.
What are the best settings I should leave my computer in for energy and power, screen saver, sleep, etc. during this back up time? It's a four year old MacBook pro with snow leopard. I'll probably be upgrading to lion once I have the new he installed as well. Thanks for any advice!
