Moving photos

How can I move photos off of MacBook Pro to external hard drive. Does the hard drive need to be especially formatted for Mac?

See the instructions at this LINK on how to move your iPhoto library to an external hard drive. Your external hard drive should be formatted as HFS + which is the preferred format. You can also use FAT-32.
