Problem with thumb drives

I just bought a MacBook Pro and still learning. The main problem i have is that transfer rates to thumb drives are very slow. I had much faster rates on my PC with USB 1.1. I have tried reformatting them for Mac and they are still the same. My transfer rates to external drives are fine about a 1 gb a minute or less but about 4 min for 1 gb for the thumbs. I have both Sandisk and HP and it is the same. Does anybody have any ideas?

are you using some sort of usb hub or something?

no just the standard 2.0 ports on the macbook
