I have a macbook pro and all the sudden it does not turn of any more. When I hit the power button I hear the hard drive and dvd drive to run and the power indicator on the front of the macbook is on as well but the screen stays black even-though I connect a dvi monitor the screen there stays black as well. I unplugged the battery and power supply and also pushed and held the power button for a minute to clear everything but nothing worked. Is it really dead or is there a way to get it back into a working state?

You didn't give us any information about your MacBook Pro? Year, Model, and what version of OS X it has on it?

But from your description of the symptoms, and the fact that you get no video on an attached external monitor, indicates that it's either a graphics controller defect or the logic board. In either case, the logic board would have to be changed out. And that's an expensive repair.
