Hey guys,

So I got me a 17" 2011 mac pro! Woohoo!

I also got me a problem (which hopefully you guys already have an answer for)

So when I start up this guy and his not connecting to the web I lose my time setting, its like it loses all power and has some odd time. Same thing happens when I boot the windows partition. The only difference is that my windows side wont update automagically when I connect to the web (OSX does), even though I have internet time sync on.

Whats the deal, shouldnt my time be held through the onboard battery / motherboard battery...

Thanks for your input on this guys!

Are you certain that the time zone settings are correct in both operating systems?

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

Yes, just double checked. OSX is set with all my "aussie" options and connects to the apple.asia to sync, which gives me the right time. I have also adjusted windows 7 as i installed it. When I jump on the net OSX auto updates. Though its like it doesn't hold time when it cannot resync.

surely the laptop should be counting without this, and only syncs to confirm that the time is correct.

Windows and OS X keep track of time in different ways. Do you frequently bounce back and forth between the two?

That'a probably why. Basically each time you boot into Windows and change the time, it sets your computer's internal clock a bit differently. Then, when you boot into OS X, it will display the wrong time because it calculates the time based on a different offset. So, you change the clock again, but then it's fouled up in Windows.

The best solution to this is to force Windows to use UTC/GMT offset to calculate the time like OS X does.

This thread over at Mac-Rumors explains it:

Boot Camp -> Mac OS X Time Issues - MacRumors Forums

Another alternative that will save you a ton of headaches would be to install Windows through virtualization so that you can run OS X and Windows simultaneously. Then you can seamlessly transfer files between the two OSes and everything is is in sync.

Are you sure about that? Modern virtualization products run Windows at native speeds. The only time that's not true is when you're running heavy-hitting 3D apps (mostly games). Assuming you have plenty of RAM, IMO, virtualization is the only way to go.

You can actually run an existing Boot Camp partition as a VM and switch between native and virtualized if need be.
