Dead iBook battery...

Unsurprisingly the battery in my mid 2005 G4 iBook is completely dead (mains power cord light stays on orange rather than going to green to indicate charging and ''(0%)'' shown next to the battery icon in the Menu bar).

As purely a back up/email machine I won't be investing in a new battery and will run it purely from mains power.

Is it ok to leave the dead battery installed in the iBook or will I cause some sort of damage?

You can leave it in the machine, however, I would periodically check it to make sure it's not leaking or swelling. If you check on eBay, I believe you can buy an inexpensive "knock off" battery for your iBook for less than $50.
