Macbook pro won't let me transfer from external hard drive to external hard drive

I bought a new external hard drive because my old one is beat to heck. I tried transfering my files from one hard drive to the other and it won't let me. I tried just putting it on the laptop then transfering it to the other hard drive and it still won't let me. Any ideas?

IDK it's whatever format they come with. It's a WD 1 tb. Works fine when I use a friends macbook but won't with my macbook pro. His is a few years older though.
