crackling noise on macbook pro

my wife has had her notebook, macbook pro for just over a year, since yesterday I have noticed a crackling sound coming from underneath/side as if its the hard drive, its not all the time just now and again, its not the fans or the sound.
it sounds a bit like when you can hear an electrical short.
the notebook used to be silent. its a bit like on a pc when you can hear it accessing the hardrive.
