Macbook Pro gets stuck at startup screen.

I was using my computer when it crashed. I tried to boot up and it sat at the screen with the apple logo for about 6 minutes before a different icon took the place of the apple. I tried this several times and got the same results. I then tried booting it in safe mode and it is currently stuck with an empty progress bar (and it has been like this for about 2 hours.) Any suggestions?

I'm new to this forum as well and Macs. But I think you may need to use your install disc that came with the Mac. There is probably a repair routine on the disc that you can use to repair the damage. You can search the forum for more information.
I hope that you have a backup? Did you add some software or do something in the guts of the system that may have caused this?15 " 2013 MBP OS X Ver. 10.9.1 16 GB Memory, 500 GB SSD, Retina, 2.3 Ghz I7, 30GB IPhone 5, 2012 Mini Cooper JCW Coupe, 2014 Toyota Corolla, 2007 Trailblazer, 2 RC Planes, 1 fantastic wife who puts up with my toys.
