How do I open .sit format?

I downloaded the PainterIX on mac, but it's in .sit format, how do I open it? Is it some kind of compressed file?

yes but the new versions of mac dont come with drop it (stuff it compressor) for some reason. so the stuffit expander only expands files like .sit .rar .zip .(etc) .
