Ok so i have a 700 g3 ibook. bought it off of ebay and well the dude sent me an Emac restore dvd with panther on it.

so far i hate panther. eats up too much resources on this small 700.

Anyways the problem is this.

I have 2 os9 cd's that I have, But neither one of them will boot up.

Tried doing it through the Cpanel and everything. no luck.
Tried just wiping the ibook clean and doing the os9 install as such, no luck still.

I want os9. for all i use this thing for it is perfect,

help is needed.

What version of OS9 do you have. I believe the ibook you have will only run/boot from OSX. You have to run OS9.2 as emulation.

Are you sure your friends ibook only has OS9 on it? Once OSX is loaded and OS9.2 is installed, it's possible to make the computer boot exclusively to OS9. However the OSX operating kernal has to be present on the HD in order for it to boot. I'd be willing to bet that's what he's doing.

Be sure that OS 9 CDs are bootable. Is your friends OS 9 media bootable?

What's on the ibook now? You have to have version OS9.2 for it to work under OSX. If you have OS9.2 on CD and the load on your ibook does not currently have OS9.2 on it, then it's not a simple matter to just add it. You have to build from scratch starting with OSX, because you have to have a OS9 boot partition to make it boot exclusively to OS9.

May depend on when your machine was built. I think you must have 9.1 or 9.2 as a minimum version to boot it. As mentioned above, the CD's would have had to of been made bootable when they were created. Check out this page.

Well, I can tell you from experience that a 700Mhz G3 is definitely NOT "too small" for OS X Panther, and Panther should not be taking up too many resources.
I had two 400MHz G3 iMacs running it with no problems whatsoever. What you would need to do is up the RAM. How much are you currently running that iBook with? IMO, anything less than 512MB for OS X is just plain not enough. I had 512MB in both of the older iMacs and they ran swimmingly on 10.3.9. :black:

Still, if you must use OS; then yes, your iBook will boot into OS 9.

and, no you do not need to have OS X installed in any way, shape or form to do so.
Like rman said, make sure that you are using bootable CD's when trying to install OS 9. Also, you will need to make sure that you have a retail version of 9.2.x to install it onto your iBook.

My suggestion would be to just stick with OS X and add some more RAM to the computer. Once you add the RAM, do an erase and install using an HFS+ format for the OS X install.
