Apple genius told me the hard drive was bad which is what I suspected. The system doesn't recognize the hard drive even after I replaced it and tried to install the system software. I've tried every other trick before that. Could it be the SATA cable

I know I am probably asking about some things you have already done but here goes just in case:

1. When attempting to re-mstall the software did you launch Disk Utility from the DVD and format the drive first?

2. When choosing the formatting options for the drive you did choose GUID as the partition type and Mac OS Extended or Extended with journalling correct?

Need to format the HDD before you can install any OS.
