Sounds like you have a failed optical drive. Is this in a MacBook or iMac as these seem to go through optical drieves quite often? Just do a check of the forums.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Alas dmt they use a minaturised optical drive. If you go through the forums you will find many, many posts about MB, MBP and iMacs with failed Mat****a drives. One reason why use Pioneer drives.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
