Actually, it is still possible to destroy a harddisk with a normal magnet, but yes, it has to be quite powerfull. Harddisks basically just work exactly like floppy disks (from a pure technical point of view), but on a floppy disk there's nothing much around the disk than a bit of plastic, so holding a magnet close to it is like if the disk was without enclosure.
I was once able to destroy a harddisk with a magnet, but
1. it was a very big magnet from an old Infinity speaker
2. the magnet was lying directly on the harddisk
3. it was lying like that for almost a week
So basically, there's nothing to worry about...
