My machine is a 12" PB, and has worked perfectly for about a year . . . until this morning. Suddenly, it refused to turn on with or without the power cord. Not sure how to proceed short of sending back to Apple for repair. I'm a total knucklehead about these sorts of problems and have been unable to find any info here using the search function.

If the situation is beyond what a novice might expect to fix I don't mind paying for repair work, but hate to be without the machine. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

Have you tried with the battery removed? Sometimes a bad Lithium Ion battery can cause this behaviour.

No, it never occurred to me to try that. Thanks for the suggestion - I'll give that a shot in the morning.

Removing the battery doesn't seem to have any effect on the machine, unfortunately; it still won't turn on. Is there anything else I should try before sending it off for repair?

May have to do that, but can't for a while. Just had a little work done on my knee. Walking and driving are still very awkward, so I've been trying to get the machine going myself . . . with the advice of any wise soul who might help.

Try holding down the power key a while?

Try resetting the power management unit (see the sticky in the iBook forum for info on the key combination).

I had a similar issue once, and resetting the PMU helped it.

EDIT: Here's what you need to do:
Quote:
If you are experiencing trouble with power issues, such as:
- Charging problems
- Instant loss of power whilst running off battery
- iBook refuses to switch on
then you might need to reset the PRAM (Parameter RAM) or the PMU (Power Management Unit).

To reset the PRAM, hold Apple-Option-P-R simultaneously at the Apple logo.

To reset the PMU, hold down “Shift-Control-Option-Power “.

Aptmunich, I'm very grateful to you, sir. Your suggestions worked and this post is being sent with the now functioning PowerBook. The battery is out of the machine, though I'm not quite sure if it's charged or drained. Next visit to the Apple store think I'll just buy another and not worry about it.

Thanks again to you and Vicky for the quick responses.

Thanks Aptmunich, I'm glad you managed to make that suggestion swifter than me as that was next on the list :flower: Of course, with me only just waking up (on my day off work), it would have been a much longer wait for bmwrob to find his PowerBook is just fine :flower: It's really great how this forum really does help each other out!

On a side note, I received my PowerBook 12" back yesterday which apparently is 'fine', and our tech' department said to me "Whatever you're doing to it, give it a break!" :flower: Whatever that may be, I'm leaving Classic off of it for now as it was fine before I installed that! Either way, I know what it's like to get your Mac back from the brink and being such a saddo, I hugged it when I got it back yesterday!
