I recently bought a western digital 2 TB external hard drive. Its a usb 3.0, so I was thinking it would transfer a lot faster. But it actually goes much slower. It just took me 17 minutes to transfer a 7GB movie. Why is this? My computer specs are in my signature. Thanks for the help.

Hey Josh.. apple unfortunately doesn't utilize USB 3.0.... instead, they went with the all mighty "thunder bolt"

This means that even if your external drive has usb 3.0 you still wont get speeds any faster than 2.0. Does it have a FW 400/800 port?

What signature? None of the Macs have USB 3.0 ports yet - so all you will see is 2.0 rates.

Ok, I understand that, but it isnt even going at 2.0 speeds, its going much slower.

And i have a white macbook from 2010, so no firewire.

2010 White Macbook, 10.6.7 Snow Leopard, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Memory, 150GB Internal Harddrive.

I may be wrong but 17min for a 7GB from an external drive, most likely 5400 rpm, sounds about right with USB 2 since it's not USB 3.0 compatible.

I don't understand why apple removed the firewire port on the 2010 macbooks. And replaced it with nothing. why not firewire 800?
QUOTE Thanks
