MBP Keyboard Light won't Turn Off

hi guys, I'm new to the forum (but not new to forums, as I own a pretty big one myself!) and need some help!

Today was the joyous day when I took delivery of my first Mac, a new MacBook Pro 13"! Generally I'm over the moon with it (as I knew I would be), but I do have one slight issue.

Ever since I've had it, the backlit keys have been on. I've been in a bright environment but they just don't seem to want to automatically turn off like they should! I've been searching everywhere but can't seem to figure out how to sort it!

I can turn them off or dim them manually by using F5 and F6, but I'd quite like them to be automatic if I could! So any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Mac-Forums Ash

Have a look in System Preferences > Keyboard and see if the checkbox next to "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" is checked or not.

Yeah that's checked, that's what's confusing me the most. If I uncheck that, the keyboard doesn't illuminate at all (obviously), but when it's checked the keyboard is always illuminated

Ahh right sorry, I don't think I read your post right lol, it's been a long day!! The keys on my MBP are almost always on too, it's only until it is in almost direct sunlight that they seem to get turned off. I think it is set so the sensors aren't too sensitive at all. Not sure if there is a way around this but may be worth a look.

lol yeah it's been a pretty long day for me as well! Maybe I'll just have to see what it's like in the long term. Otherwise I'll just turn it off I suppose and then only turn it on when I need it!

And then I'll post back here what I find

No worries, personally I keep mine on all the time at about the half-way mark, just personal preference, it looks pretty

hit the F5 button (with a little shiny symbol on it) on its own repeatedly until the brightness level steps down .Eventually the keyboard backlight will turn itself off.
This is a nice to have function but actually distractive in my case.
