My left fan has something wrong and makes a pretty loud rattling sound that gets louder as the RPMs increase.

I'm looking around on ebay and other private sellers and the cheapest new fan is $40. On ebay there are several used fans listed for $18. I don't know much about the typical durability of fans and was wondering if it is safe to get a used fan or if, like a hard drive, it's too much of a risk and It would be worth doubling the price for the new one.

TIA.

I'm with 6string on this one.

Replace your 4 1/2 yr old fan with another 4 1/2 yr old one?

I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.

There are a lot of things for which I would gladly consider used over new (DvDs come to mind) when there is limited risk other than cost to replace if the used item turns out to be junk.
In this case you have to ask yourself about the cost and aggravation of having to redo your repair and/or the additional downtime in waiting for a replacement if the used fan is no good.
Unless the extra $20 for new means you don't eat for a couple of days I wouldn't even blink and go new all the way.

Of course, I know everything . . . I just can't remember it all at once.

Yeah...If you put it like that it does sound stupid. My brain works on percentages/ratios. I saw $18 versus $40 and I see a 122% price increase....not a $22 increase.

Gonna order the new fan today.
