Is there any way to sync iTunes to a portable, external hard drive, or to a MacBook, as though it were an iPod?

I have a large iTunes library, ripped as Apple Lossless, which resides on a home Mini media-server. I would like to be able to sync all, or part of it to a MacBook (or ext. HD), but so that it compresses the files to MP3 (or AAC), the way you can do when syncing to an iPod.

I guess that one option would be if there were a way to export multiple playlists in a compressed format and then import them to the MacBook's iTunes library, but I don't know of a way to do this either.

I'm wondering the same thing. I just got my MBA a few days ago and I'm trying to figure out the best method for "syncing" or simultaneously converting and transfer my itunes file over from my desktop.
