sound disappears on MacBook/no volume on videos

Has anyone else had a problem with not being able to hear the sound on videos with their MacBook? It seems like every few days when I go to play something the video will load but I cannot hear it. As soon as I restart, it works fine. I do tend to have multiple programs running, though I can't say it happens from one specific thing. Thanks!

When there is no sound from the speakers can you hear the sound when you plug in a pair of earphones?

Thanks,Simon. I will try to see if the earphones work next time it happens (right now it's working fine and I don't know how to make it "un-work.")
