Western Digital is a personal favourite, but any should do the job just fine.

I got a Samsung Spinpoint for Xmas and have had a few problems. I'm not 100% sure it's with the hard drive or something buggy I was unaware of prior to the replacement...but it's still frustrating.

I've done a complete reformat - zeroing out the data - and reinstall of snow leopard, and I'm still getting I/O errors. I'm about to mail the drive back to Samsung for a replacement. If the replacement still gives me those errors, then I'll be pretty confident it is something else.

In any case, I do wish I had gone with another manufacturer.

You'll get different opinions on this given that "best" is a subjective term. That said, I'd suggest Western Digital (always had good luck with them here) and I'd avoid Toshiba drives. I've had friends succumb to the poor quality of Toshiba computer parts before.

Then look for one that has USB 3, which should usually perform faster. While Seagate is selling them already as external drives. One might think about a USB 3 external enclosure (from someone like OWC) AKA mac sales) which has a USB 3 and then pick a hard drive to install which is 7200 and has as large a cache as possible.

Can someone here talk about the value of a firewire, and what the limit is of an external that is light enough on power that one does not need an additional power connection on the external.??

Of course, if all one is going to do is back up one's computer, then maybe speed is not worth any additional money.
