Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro that is about a year old. It was really working fine.
But suddenly it just displayed a blue screen, no mouse, no login....

My wife then switched it off and on again.
The apple logo appears, for a short time you see the mouse, can move it around, then it disappears and the blue screen remains "for ever". There is no login prompt or something else.

For trouble shooting I started the MacBook in save mode. The progress bar and the apple logo appear, but then the OS tries to start something that fails somehow and all ends in a endless loop... The moving wheel is displayed, then the screen is reset, the moving screen is displayed, then the screen is reset etc... :-(

Does somebody know how I can do a smoth recovery? There is some data on I would like to keep if possible...

Thank you

Cheers

Welcome to Mac-Forums

First thing to try is a PRAM and NVRAM reset, to do this hold down the CMD+ALT+P+R keys simultaneously, just after you hear the startup chime, hold them down until you hear the chime again.

Next thing to try is to repair disk and permissions. To do this, boot into your OSX installation DVD, click Utilities > Disk Utility. Once in Disk Utility click your HDD from the left pane, then click the First Aid tab. Next click Repair Disk, once done click Repair Disk Permissions.
This could take a while so be patient with it, once done you can reboot.

Hope one of these helps

Hello Simon

Thank you for your advise. I tried the first point. I heard the chime, the computer did some reboots ore something similar. But the symptoms are still the same...

The second one I cannot do (currently) because I have no recovery disk/DVD or at least I do not know where it could be...

Some more ideas?

Thank you

Cheers

As Rob has stated you need to get those recovery disks, or buy new ones that are for the same OS as you are running. If you are running Snow Leopard you can use the Snow Leopard Upgrade disks, they only cost $27 or £25.
Once you get them keep them in a very safe place

Hi Simon & robduckyworth

I just went to the store and bought a new OS-X disk and started the disk utilities. It reported lots of permission problems.
But fixing these problems, checking the disk volume (all ok) did not solve the problem. The MacBook still hung during startup.

After three or four reboots I just installed the snow leopard os on the mac book hoping it may not kill all the data on it...
Finally I got a working MacBook with all the data on it -> no data loss... great!

I was so happy.
But then (!...grml) I found the missing recovery CD I was looking for so long time... ;-)

Thank you for your help and your advises.

Cheers
