Will a Magsafe adapter from the original MBPs work with the current ones?

Yes. They're exactly the same 85W adaptors.

As far as I have seen all of the MagSafe adapters are completely interchangeable other than wattage.
When we travel I bring a single MBP adapter and use it for my MBP and my wife's MacBook.

Of course, I know everything . . . I just can't remember it all at once.

I thought that was the case. You can use the 85w adapter with the MacBook Pro or the MacBook but you can't use the 60w one that came with the MacBook on the MacBook Pro, right?

Correct.
Not sure there is any real down side other than slow charging and may not be able to support peripherals. Possible overheating problem if you use the low wattage adapter on a MBP. Again, potential problem, may not actually play out in practice.

I tend to doubt that the 60W will power the MBP - but I can't support that with fact, although I could test it when I get home as my wife has one. However, it doesn't seem wise as the additional 25W capacity is there for a reason, so if it does, I'd expect that white plastic to be nice and warm.

As a completely unscientific footnote - as I was migrating from my Jan 2011 MBP to my new March 2011 MBP - I had them side by side and did notice that the new MBP transformer seemed warmer to the touch than the Jan one. I have no data to back that up other than "feel" so take it with a grain of salt But it wouldn't surprise me to learn that the new MBP's pull more power than the old ones.
