Try repairing the disk and permissions.
To do this boot into your install dvd, go to Utilities > Disk Utility, click your HDD from the left pane, click the First Aid tab, click Repair Disk, once done click Repair Disk Permissions. This could take a while so be patient with it, once done reboot and see if you now have success logging in. You could also try resetting the PRAM & NVRAM Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM Hope this helps - Simon Rest In Peace Steven Paul Jobs February 24, 1955 - October 5, 2011 [aged 56]
