I've tried starting up in safe mode by holding down the shift key and it shuts down. When when starting up holding down app & S key the last two items it loads reads:

If you want to make modifications to files:
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /

If you wish to boot the system, but stay in single user mode:
sh /etc/rc
localhost:/ root#
QUOTE Thanks
