Reformat my External drive?

so i'm having trouble with my external hard drive and emptying it found here

trash Can wont empty

but is there a way to just reformat my external and start over again?

You can reformat your external drive by using Disk Utility from Applications, Utilities. Formatting will destroy all the data on the drive so before you do it, be sure you backup whatever data you wish to keep first.

It may be worth pointing out that if you are going to be using the external hard drive solely with mac computers, then formatting to Mac OS Extended will be the best option.

And to build on this, if you plan on using this HD with other OSes, it would be best to format it with the FAT filesystem.
