Its about 5 years old. I got it off of ebay with a great seller. It boots up really quick. Its been refurbished and should run excellent. And it did for a day and then I started hearing this quiet metal on metal continuous crackling sound on the left. It went away. Then I heard it again but fainter in the back. Mostly its not there.

But what I REALLY got upset about is that I get locked into sites. It just wont load all of a sudden. For example I cant open a link (can move the mouse around and everything else) but it only half loads. I can be in yahoo questions and try to click submit. Submit lights up, I can move around the screen but it only half loads. So I have to restart the laptop to try again.

The battery was low and it was pretty hot. Could that have anything to do with this? I really dont want to return this. I got it in custom pink. Im hoping that someone can tell me what to do.

I dont have a disk so i cant do that hard drive check.

I'm a little confused on exactly how long you've had this iBook...but it sounds like you just got it & have only had it a couple days. Since you're having these problems basically as soon as you received the iBook...it doesn't sound to me that the person on e-Bay you got it from is a "great seller". Unless there is a "terrible" coincidence going on here where the seller really is a great & honest person...and these problems with the iBook started all of a sudden or got damaged in shipping.

Regarding "refurbishing"...you don't exactly "refurbish" a 5 year-old computer. It's just like a 5 year-old used automobile...you don't exactly "refurbish" a 5 year-old car...and erase 5 years worth of "wear & tear".

I'm also confused by this statement. iBook's ONLY came in white (if we're talking about non-Clamshell iBook's)...so I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "custom pink"?

It sounds to me like the hard drive is "going bad" and it won't be long before it goes completely dead. It is possible to replace the hard drive...but it's not a easy task...and if you can't do it yourself...iBook's are VERY hard to take apart. Between the cost of parts & labor to have the hard drive replaced...it would probably cost more than the iBook is worth.

If I were you...I would return this iBook ASAP!!!

Hope this helps,

- Nick

No. Its not the clamshell. Those are really old. Its just like a regular mac but its painted pink. They have that done in other colours as well. Even to some of the new macpros.

The ebay guys thinks its the hard drive too and says he will fix it for free but im thinking after what you said that I will just get my money back. : (

I know ColorWare will colorize your Mac or Windows computers, iPhones, iPods, etc. for a fee. They're pretty expensive, in my opinion, but it's certainly possible someone went to the trouble to colorize their iBook. Also, older glossy iBooks were sometimes disassembled, the white paint removed from inside the shell, replaced with a different color and reassembled. Some folks just left it see-through. Kinda cool mods.

Clamshell iBook's did come in colors (as you probably know)...so sometimes when someone posts about a "colored" iBook...you never know if they're confusing a "colored" Clamshell iBook with a "custom" colored white iBook.

You didn't really explain who "They" is...so it was hard to know if "They" is just an individual who is doing this "customizing"...or if it's a business who does this to lots of computers.

If the e-Bay seller is willing to replace the hard drive for free...as long as you're not spending too much money back & forth with shipping...it could be worth it if you REALLY like the pink color...and the color customizing was done very professionally...and looks great!

Good luck deciding,
