Today my macbook made a dialing tone like that which occurs when you press the numbers on a telephone keypad, i turned airport off and it did it all the more, what could this have been?

Is it still doing it or was it a one time occurrence? And did you at one time have an external modem attached to your machine?

It happened a few times that day and not since then. No external modem has ever been wired to it it has only ever been connected through wifi

Do you have some form of cable TV? If so, is your provider the same as your ISP? If the answers are yes, and yes, one might suspect you're doing things you shouldn't be...or it was just a fluke. But I'm curious to hear what the vets here have to say.

Are you running Skype? Skype has the ability to dial out over their network and make those tones, but you would have to push the dial pad numbers while in a call to hear them. Other VOIP apps do the same thing.
