Silver or Chrome bar/button on front of MBP

I have a thin silver(chromish) bar or button on the front of macbook pro a1260. What is it for?

Mac Specs: Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)

6string is offline
It releases the latches to open the notebook. Over time they may not catch anymore, and therefore, it may not have any function.
