Macbook charger keeps computer at constant percent?

My MacBook OS X 10.5.8 has the T shaped magsafe charger. When I plug it in, the LED lights do not turn on, and my battery stays at whatever percent. When I click the percent symbol (which indicates it's charging with the little connector inside the battery) it says 'batter is not charging' and right below it says 'power source: adapter.'

I am going to the apple store in a few days, but just wondering....

Try cleaning the magsafe, other than that it may be a faulty charger or machine, how old is it?
