I just received my first Mac, a 12" G3 iBook (800 MHz with 250mb ram and 30 gig drive). It has os x 10.2.x on it. I want to upgrade the ram, upgrade to tiger os, and maybe swap the cd drive out for a combo one.

Any pointers, tips etc would be appreciated. I know it's old, but it doesn't have a mark on it and seems to run just fine (and it was almost free)

I think that:

- you may need some additional ram...or it would help...some thing like 512meg (I think that the max ram for this computer is 640meg)
- if you don't have a DVD drive...you will need the multi-CD version of Tiger
- be prepared to pay a BUNCH for the Tiger CD version...the DVD version isn't cheap either

- Almost full hard drive? Some solutions. Out of Space

Sounds Like a good little buy, and one of the fastest G3 iBooks made too, as 900 MHz was the last one I believe Just add some extra ram, and it should perform fine with the OS that's already installed. Tiger seems like an unnecessary cost if you ask me. And it may slow the computer down.

Since my iBook doesn't appear to have a DVD drive, can anyone recommend either an internal or external one that will not break the bank? I see the firewire port, but to be honest I have no idea about that (though I am reading on the topic on the net) - thanks

This should do the trick:

OWC Value Line USB2.0/1.1 22X Super-MultiD

Do you have an iBook G3?...your signature says iBook G4.

There's actually not a BIG difference between an iBook G3 & iBook G4 (depending on which models are being compared)...I was just curious if maybe you came across another computer not in your signature.
