Don't mean to sound dumb here but I've never used my Macbook for WI FI in a commercial outlet before until recently, and when given the code had no idea how to connect to the internet. What must i do with airport and the code to connect ?

Click on this icon in the menu bar.
If it's not there, head for System Preferences - Network and put a check mark in 'Show AirPort status in menu bar".
Once you click on it, you'll be presented with a list of the available wireless networks. Select the one you want, put the password in the box that pops up.I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
