I have a lot of AVI and PDF stuff on an external hard drive. All the stuff is in windows folders. If I connected the external hard drive to a mac laptop would I be able to view the contents or would I have to make sure all the stuff is not in folders first?

If you connect your Windows hard drive to the Mac it will be able to be read. Whether or not you can write to the drive from the Mac depends on how the Windows drive is formatted. If it's formatted FAT-32 it will be R/W. However, if it's formatted as NTFS it will be read only.
