I had a similar problem with a PC laptop one time, the LCD backlight inverter was just loose and the screen would just go out at really random times, I just opened it up, unplugged it, then plugged it back in nice and snug, it has worked every since.

Take it to the apple store, plug it in and show them what is going on...
If they say it is normal ask them to reproduce it on the demo iMacs.
If they can't, tell them you want an exchange or it fixed ASAP.

I know some people get confused with the automatic dimming, because I think it does it anyway, regardless of the setting...

Does this only happen when you don't touch anything for a while? Does it always dim by the same amount? If so I think it's normal...
