Hi, im planning on getting a macbook soon because im sick o buying pcs that need replacing every year, my current laptop developed several faults after 13 months, a 600 pounds samsung, the charger is loose, the screen bezel is loose, the keyboard keys have come off, screen scratched, shuts down randomly.

my only dilemma is whether to get a macbook or mac mini, im worried that if i get a macbook i will damage it by moving it from place to place, having a cat and child around, and gettting the screen scratched which is why im wondering if i should get a mini and a dell monitor as i already have keyb/mouse

i will be using it for word processing and converting huge documents that contain hundreds of large tiff images to pdf and constant re editing, i can manage this on my core 2 duo, anything lower and my comp will crash which is why i have decided against a cheaper ultraportable

is the mac mini more durable than macbook and less prone to problems because it is stationary and how much of a lifespan is it expected to have compared to a macbook

will it be just as good to get a macbook then buy a shell and screen protector and use it on a table

also how does open office and gimp image editor and nitro pdf perform on a mac and is there alternatives if they aren't as good as on windows

If you already have a keyboard, display, and mouse, the Mac Mini would be a suitable desktop machine for you to use at home.

Open Office for Mac OS X works well and so does the GIMP. You'll find that for the most part, you can get an equivalent application to what you were using in Windows. The exception to that is games where Windows excels.

Regards.

Children, cats, and computers don't mix as far as sticky fingers, food, drink, dropages, hair, claws, etc., so the Mac Mini sounds like the safer option, as it is easier to keep out of reach, and protected from the child and the cat while in use, or in storage.
