Can you be more specific about what EXACTLY happens when you try to copy a file from your mbp to the external drive please?

So you can read from the drive, just not write to it?
Is it an NTFS formatted drive?

You'll need to install a third party driver. Paragon NTFS Currently on sale for $19.95.

If you're running Snow Leopard on your MBP, you can turn on the built in R/W to NTFS capability. (not turned on by default) Download the free utility "NTFS Mounter".

Regards.
