First choice (and the safe option) is Clamshell Mode Apple Portables: How to use your computer in closed clamshell (display closed) mode with an external display Next up on the list with the risk of damage due to overheating, esp if you forget that you have it awake while closed when in a case is insomniax Download InsomniaX for Mac - Disable sleep mode on an Apple Laptop.
