OK here is my indecision, I am going to get my wife her first Mac, she wants a laptop and she wants the 15.4 model. However I am torn between a 2.8 Core 2 Duo, 500 GB HD, 4 GB RAM, 9600GT and 9400M cards and the latest 2.4 i5 with the same RAM and HD compliment, but the 330 card. I will save almost $400 on the 2.8, but with the i5 being newer I am thinking it will be better future proofed.

My wife will not use this laptop for anything more than web surfing, email, writing/editing documents in Pages, watching movies, itunes etc...

Now should I pay for the increased speed she may never realize or need or just save some cash?

Thanks

The Macbook Pro is overkill for her, but if she wants the 15", the i5 is the best bet for future proofing and resale value, and as for the $400 if you get the 2.8, I would take another option which is the refurb from Apple, which will be a middle ground and save you $270 off the price of the new i5

You might try going to the Apple Store and letting her play with the iPad for a while. It would meet all the needs you mentioned (certainly a MBP is *way* overkill) and cost practically nothing by comparison ...

Alternatively, she should really look at the MacBook Air.
