So the 2GB provided by Apple isn't cutting it anymore. Is installing RAM straightforward and simple? If so, I'll just do it by myself...

Also, what RAM do I even buy.......... WHAT IF I SCREW UP?

It would be VERY helpful if you told us what model Macintosh laptop you have! But as a general rule...if you own a newer Mac laptop, it's very easy to install/remove ram.

If you're still not sure if you can do it...go to one of these websites...and view ram install videos:

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

Replacing RAM is a pretty simple install I would even say a trained monkey can do it. If you have a 2 GB compliment now you will need to buy two 2 GB modules and remove the old 1 GB modules. A Macbook made in the last 1 or 2 years utilize DDR 3 204 PIN 1066 MHz RAM modules.

Just click the Apple logo in the upper left hand corner of your OS and then click "About This Mac" to know for sure.

You can go here: Performance Upgrades; FireWire USB SATA Storage; Memory, more at OWC for a model specific how to video.

I have the first generation aluminum 13" Pro. I'm pretty sure I can do it easily. Would these be good choices?

Personally I am not familiar with the compatibility of ram from Best Buy used in Macintosh computers. I (and others) prefer to buy ram from these folks:

Crucial.com

Well I guess the 4gig kit from Crucial isn't a whole lot more than Best Buy's. Maybe I'll go with that.

The Best Buy ram may be fine. But we do occasionally get message's from folks who have trouble with the ram they buy. Ram from Crucial & OWC seem to have fewer problems (if any)...and if there is a problem (which is rare)...it's usually due to defective ram...which is promptly replaced by both companies.

Based on the reviews of the Best Buy RAM, it seems like it's Mac compatible. I'll give it a try and if all else fails, I'll return it and go to Crucial.

Thanks for the advice!

Of course being able to go directly to Best Buy & get the ram right away...rather than ordering it over the internet & waiting for it to be shipped & delivered...is a big plus.

And if Best Buy has no problem with you returning the ram (if it doesn't work)...go for it!

Just make sure you install it yourself. Don't let the "Geeks" do it. $$$

Go here, Apple - Support - Computer + Server
go to the page with your model, click specifications, add your serial number, (found in system profiler) and you will get your mac specifications. This will tell you the ram you can take, and the correct one needed for your mac

Mac is like a car, keep clean and up to date and it will give you many hours of good driving

Your Mac may have come with instructions on how to upgrade the RAM. Do you still have the manuals that came with your Mac?
